SMOKING CESSATION AND RELAPSE PREVENTION

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of avoidable morbidity and premature mortality in the United States. The economic costs of smoking to individuals and society are significant and increasing worldwide. Smoking cessation therapies have the potential to be cost-effective and even cost-saving for society. Economic evaluations of smoking cessation therapies provide useful data about the costs and benefits of various smoking cessation interventions relative to each other as well as relative to other health interventions. Because resources are limited, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness must be considered.
